Recipe: Frothed Milk

You don't need a barista or a $500 espresso/milk steamer machine to make delicious, foamy milk for your lattes.  I like making my own chai lattes at home because: 1. They are cheap 2. I can control what's going into them so I don't feel like a cow after drinking a 300 calorie drink. The only downer is that they are kind flat and boring with just regular milk in them, they need a little pizazz, the pizazz that only bubbles and foam can bring.  They sell fancy machines that will do this for you but you can make frothed milk easily at home. And I'm going to tell you how!

Ingredients/Supplies:
  • Milk
  • Saucepan
  • Immersion Blender (I know that you're going to say that this is a fancy machine, and yes it may not be found in every home, but it does many things besides froth up milk.  Yow can make smoothies and milk shakes, and it's a great way to make a cream soup, since pouring boiling hot liquids from a pot to a blender is usually a pre-cursor to disaster)

Directions:
  1. While your drink of choice is brewing (tea/coffee) pour you desired amount of milk in the saucepan and heat over medium heat.
  2. While it's heating, stick your blender in there and start blending.  You'll need to tip the pan a little to "catch" the milk.  Be careful not to splash all over the place.
  3. Just heat your milk through, no need to scald it! And keep frothing it up to your desired consistency.
  4. Now pretend that you are a barista and artfully mix your drink together.

MmmmMmmm! While you're at it, why not try this Chai Tea recipe by Sarah over at Simply Step Back?
